Operational Readiness for Maritime Emergencies
In a catastrophic maritime event—whether a fire, collision, or rapid sinking—survival is rarely determined by luck. It is determined by the crew's familiarity with their equipment and their ability to execute immediate, decisive action under extreme stress.
The Canadian Offshore Medical and Marine Survival Training Institute delivers comprehensive safety training designed to bridge the gap between regulatory compliance and actual survival competence. We move beyond basic "safety briefings" to build survival reflex—ensuring that when an alarm sounds, your team knows exactly how to deploy a life raft, utilize distress signaling, and protect themselves from the Canadian marine environment.
Who We Serve
Our survival curriculum is adaptable and scalable, designed to meet the specific liability, safety, and operational needs of four distinct groups:
1. Yacht Clubs & Marinas
Elevate the standard of seamanship within your organization. We partner with clubs to host "Safety at Sea" days, parking lot flare demonstrations, or pool-based life raft sessions. This provides high-value engagement for your members and fosters a responsible boating culture.
2. Government Agencies & Small Businesses
For marine construction crews, environmental researchers, and patrol units, the water is a workplace hazard. We provide Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) compliant training focused on cold water immersion, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) integrity, and man-overboard recovery to satisfy Duty of Care obligations.
3. Bluewater Sailors & Long-Distance Cruisers
A life raft in a canister is useless if you don't know how to deploy it. Our training prepares couples and crews for the worst-case scenario—abandoning ship. We focus on the practical handling of survival gear and the psychology of long-term survival while awaiting rescue.
We Come to You: Mobile Training Solutions
We understand that transporting crews to a training center is logistically difficult. To solve this, we operate as a fully mobile training institute.
During the operating season, our instructors travel extensively throughout Ontario and beyond, bringing our demonstration life rafts, immersion suits, and signaling simulators directly to you.
-
Club Events: Host a life raft inflation demo on your lawn or dock.
-
Corporate Safety: We conduct dry-land training in your warehouse or office to minimize downtime.
-
Regional Tours: Check our schedule to see when our mobile unit is visiting your harbor or coastal community.
The Curriculum: Equipment Mastery & Environmental Defense
Our courses are rooted in SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) principles and adapted for private vessels and Blue Water Cruisers. The focus is on Equipment Familiarity, Cold Water Survival, and Search & Rescue Visibility.
Core Modules Include:
-
Abandon Ship Procedures: The critical decision-making process, "Mayday" protocols, and the orderly evacuation to emergency craft.
-
Life Raft Operations: Hands-on training with deployment, righting a capsized raft, boarding techniques, and managing life inside the raft (rationing, morale, and hygiene).
-
Pyrotechnics & Signaling: Safe handling of SOLAS flares (rocket, hand, smoke), dye markers, and modern electronic signaling (EPIRB, PLB, AIS SART).
-
Cold Water Survival: Understanding the phases of coldwater immersion, the HELP (Heat Escape Lessening Position), and utilizing immersion suits to extend survival time.
-
Personal Survival Equipment: Proper fitting and maintenance of PFDs, harnesses, tethers, and jacklines.
Custom Training & Consultancy
Every vessel and operation carries unique risks. As a division of Advanced Rescue Solutions Canada, we provide expert consultancy to ensure your vessel is equipped correctly before you leave the dock.
-
Vessel Abandonment Plans: We help you draft custom emergency checklists tailored to your specific crew size and vessel layout.
-
Equipment Audits: Not all safety gear is created equal. We provide independent advice on selecting life rafts, grab bags, and survival suits suitable for your specific voyage or workplace.
-
Man Overboard (MOB) Drills: We facilitate dry-run or in-water recovery drills to test your crew’s ability to retrieve a person from the water.
Survival gear is only as effective as the hands that operate it.
Whether you are managing a commercial marine team or preparing for an ocean crossing, confidence comes from competence.
